How to Store and Protect Lorcana Cards

Whether you are a player building a competitive deck or a collector chasing every rare card, keeping your cards in good condition is the best way to maintain their value. Here is a simple, guide on how to store and protect Lorcana cards.

How to Store & Protect Lorcana Cards

1. Use Sleeves (The First Line of Defense)

Sleeves are the most important accessory for any TCG player. They protect the surface of the card from scratches and the edges from whitening.

  • Standard Sleeves: These are the regular-sized sleeves you use for playing. Brands like Dragon Shield or Ultimate Guard are very popular because they are durable and easy to shuffle.
  • Penny Sleeves: These are thin, clear plastic sleeves. They are very cheap and great for protecting cards that you are just storing in a box rather than playing with.
  • Double-Sleeving: For your most valuable cards, use an “Inner Sleeve” (also called a Perfect Fit) inside a standard sleeve. Insert the inner sleeve from the top and the outer sleeve from the bottom to create an airtight seal that keeps out dust and moisture.

2. Card Binders (For Collections)

If you want to look at your cards frequently or show off a set, a binder is your best bet.

  • Side-Loading Pockets: Look for binders where cards slide in from the side rather than the top. This prevents cards from falling out if the binder is turned upside down.
  • Avoid O-Rings: Standard 3-ring binders from office supply stores can accidentally dent the cards closest to the metal rings. Use “ringless” binders with fixed pages instead.
  • Zippered Binders: Binders that zip shut provide extra protection against dust and ensure nothing slips out during travel.

3. Hard Protection (For Your Best Hits)

For “Enchanted” or high-value legendary cards, soft sleeves might not be enough.

  • Toploaders: These are rigid plastic holders. You should always put a card in a penny sleeve before sliding it into a toploader to prevent the hard plastic from scratching the card face.
  • Magnetic One-Touch Cases: These are the ultimate for display. They are thick, clear blocks that snap together with a magnet. They look great on a shelf and offer the best physical protection.

4. Safe Storage Boxes

For the “bulk” cards (commons and uncommons) that you have in large quantities:

  • Cardboard Storage Boxes: You can find white cardboard “BCW” boxes at any card shop. They are inexpensive and come in sizes that hold anywhere from 100 to 5,000 cards.
  • Troves: The storage boxes that come with Lorcana Trove sets are excellent for organizing your cards by ink color or set.

Preventing “Foil Curling”

Have you noticed your shiny foil cards starting to bend like a Pringle? This is usually caused by humidity.

  • Too Much Moisture: If it’s too humid, the cardboard back expands faster than the foil front, causing it to curl inward.
  • Too Little Moisture: If the air is too dry, it can curl the other way.
  • The Fix: Store your valuable foils in a sealed container or a zippered binder with a small silica gel packet (those little “Do Not Eat” bags often found in shoe boxes). This helps keep the moisture levels steady and your cards flat.
