Understanding Lorcana Rotation Cycles
To keep the game fresh and accessible for new players, Ravensburger utilizes a Rotation system for its primary competitive format, Core Constructed.
How Rotation Works
Rotation occurs annually every late summer/early autumn, coinciding with the release of the first set of the new “game year” (typically the 9th, 13th, 17th sets, etc.).
- The 2-Year Rule: Only the current year’s sets and the previous year’s sets are legal in Core Constructed. This maintains a pool of roughly 8–10 expansions at any given time.
- The First Rotation (Sept 2025): With the release of Fabled (Set 9), Sets 1 through 4 were rotated out.
- The Second Rotation (July 2026): With the release of Attack of the Vine! (Set 13), Sets 5 through 8 (Shimmering Skies through Reign of Jafar) will rotate out.
The “Reprint Exception”
If a card from an older, rotated set is reprinted in a currently legal set, all versions of that card remain legal for tournament play. This ensures that staples like Stitch – Rock Star or Ariel – Singing Mermaid can remain in the meta if they appear in newer “Fabled” or “Collection” sets.
Infinity Constructed Format
For players who want to use their entire collection without restrictions, Ravensburger supports the Infinity format. This is a non-rotating format where every card ever printed in Lorcana is legal, subject only to a specific ban list for game balance.
Future Expectations: 2026 and Beyond
The future of the Inklands looks incredibly diverse as the game moves into its fourth year. Collectors and players can look forward to several major shifts:

- Pixar Integration: Starting with Wilds Unknown, Pixar properties have become a permanent fixture of the game. We expect to see more “Toy” and “Super” character designations that offer unique synergy-based deck building.
- Advanced Rarities: The introduction of Epic and Iconic rarities has added a new tier for high-end collectors. These cards feature 3D hot-stamp effects and unique foil patterns that set them apart from standard Legendaries.
- Expanded Storytelling: The Illumineer’s Quest series will continue to serve as the narrative “finale” for yearly story arcs. As the “Monstrous Vine” saga concludes in late 2026, a new overarching mystery in Hyperia City is expected to carry the game through 2027.
- Live-Action Potential: While the game currently focuses on animation (the “Ink” theme), rumors and community demand suggest that Ravensburger may eventually explore stylized art for live-action properties like The Muppets or Pirates of the Caribbean as early as 2028.
By staying updated with the release order and rotation schedule, you can ensure your collection remains both valuable and tournament-ready as the world of Lorcana continues to expand.
