Lorcana Shift Guide

How the Shift Keyword Works

In Disney Lorcana, the Shift keyword is more than just a rule—it represents the transformative power of the “Floodborn.” It allows a character to evolve into a more powerful version of themselves, often arriving much earlier than your opponent expects.

Whether you’re looking to gain a competitive edge or just want to understand how your favorite characters interact, mastering Shift is essential for any Illumineer.

How to Shift in Lorcana

What is Shift?

Shift is an keyword found on specific Floodborn characters. It allows you to play that card for an alternate cost (usually cheaper) by placing it directly on top of another character you already have in play that shares the same name.

The Golden Rule of Shifting: The cards must share the core name.

Shift a Card in Disney Lorcana
  • Example: You can Shift Stitch – Rock Star onto Stitch – New Dog. Even though their full titles are different, they are both “Stitch.”

How to Shift: Step-by-Step

  1. Check the Cost: Look at the Shift keyword on the card in your hand. It will list an Ink cost (e.g., Shift 2).
  2. Verify the Target: Ensure you have a character in play with the same name.
  3. Pay and Play: Pay the Shift cost and place the new card directly on top of the old one. They now act as a single unit.

Why Shifting is a Game-Changer

The most powerful aspect of Shifting isn’t just the discount—it’s speed.

  • Bypassing “Ink Drying”: Normally, a character must wait a turn before they can quest or challenge. However, if the character underneath has already been in play since the start of your turn, the Shifted character can act immediately.
  • Inherited State: The new character inherits everything from the old one: damage counters, whether they are exerted/ready, and any active effects.

Legendary Shift Examples

  • The Early Powerhouse: Shifting The Queen – Commanding Presence (Shift 2) onto The Queen – Regal Monarch on turn two. This allows you to start manipulating your opponent’s strength and questing for higher lore before they’ve even set up their board.
  • The Board Sweeper: Shifting Tinker Bell – Giant Fairy (Shift 4) onto Tinker Bell – Tiny Tactician. This move can deal widespread damage to your opponent’s characters as early as turn four, swinging the momentum of the game in an instant.

Important “What Ifs?”

  • What happens if the character is banished? If a Shifted character is banished, returned to your hand, or moved to the inkwell, both cards go to that new zone.
  • Can you Shift onto a Shifted card? Yes! You can continue to “stack” characters as long as they share the same name.
  • What about damage? If your base character has 2 damage on it, the new Shifted character will still have those 2 damage counters when it enters play.
